The government has taken decisions to make biometric verification of mobile SIM card dealers mandatory and discontinue the bulk connection mechanism.
Briefing the media in New Delhi, Communication Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, registration will also be compulsory for all point-of-sale dealers.

Minister informed that 52 lakh fraudulent connections have been detected and deactivated and 67 thousand SIM card dealers have been blacklisted.
Mr. Vaishnaw said, 300 FIR have been lodged. He said, 66 thousand WhatsApp accounts and eight lakh payment wallet accounts have been blocked.

Indian wrestler Priya Malik clinched a Gold medal at the 2023 U20 World Wrestling Championships (women’s 76kg freestyle) in Jordan by defeating Laura Celine Kuehn of Germany.
She became just the second woman wrestler from India to be crowned the U20 world championship.
Antim Panghal had been the first woman from India to win a junior world title in wrestling at last year’s edition.

Eminent writer and academician Kandlakunta Alaha Singaracharyulu passed away in Hyderabad.
He was known for his extensive literary works in Telugu and Sanskrit languages.
He wrote more than 15 books on Telugu and Sanskrit languages including translations, grammar, and speeches.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for his contributions to the field of Sanskrit literature and education.

The Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture, and Languages (JKAACL) 7-day multilingual short story festival began at the JKAACL premises in Srinagar.
This is for the first time that such a big festival of short stories was organised by JKAACL.
Writers of Dogri, Hindi, Punjabi, Gojri, Pahari and Kashmiri languages presented their short stories in the 7-day festival.

Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos has commenced the integration process of its groundbreaking launch vehicle, Agnibaan SOrTeD (Sub-Orbital Technological Demonstrator), with its private launchpad situated at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
The rocket is driven by Agnikul’s patented Agnilet engine, which is a 3D-printed, single-piece, 6 kN semi-cryogenic engine.
AgniKul Cosmos Private Limited, an Indian aerospace manufacturer headquartered at the National Center for Combustion R&D of IIT Madras in Chennai, emerges as a pioneering space technology start-up.
Established in 2017 with a resolute vision, AgniKul Cosmos aims to create and launch its independent small-lift launch vehicle, exemplified by the Agnibaan model, designed to deploy payloads of up to 100 kg into orbits spanning 700 km.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant released a biodiversity atlas of Mayem village in North Goa, which he termed “India’s first village atlas”.
This atlas gives a socio-cultural history of Mayem village that dates back to the 12th century Mayem has become the first village in Goa to have a biodiversity atlas, a 250-page document with maps detailing the floral and faunal biodiversity of the village.
The atlas was prepared based on the People’s biodiversity register (PBR) prepared by the village Biodiversity management committee.

Built in 43 days: India’s first 3D-printed post office was inaugurated in Bengaluru Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually inaugurated the post office, the construction of which was carried out by Larsen & Toubro Limited with technological support from IIT Madras.
About two years ago, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated India’s first 3D-printed house, constructed on the campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras by Tvasta Manufacturing Solutions.
Contrary to traditional construction methods, 3D printing uses a robotic arm to create layers using a special concrete mixture fed into the system.

The Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri R. K. Singh dedicated to the nation a 660 MW Unit of Barh Super Thermal Power Project at Barh in Bihar, August 18, 2023.
The 660 MW unit inaugurated today is Unit #2 of Stage I of the project.

The day is dedicated to the art and science of photography.

Archaeologists working at Keeladi, a historic excavation site located 12 km southeast of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, have unearthed a crystal quartz weighing unit from the Sangam era.
The weighing unit found 175 cm beneath the ground, is the first of its kind since excavations began in Keeladi in 2014.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has slapped a fine of Rs 40 lakh on Axis Bank for failing to notify the regulator about its acquisition of a stake in CSC e-Governance.
The transaction under consideration comprised the acquisition of a 9.91 per cent stake in CSC e-Governance by Axis Bank and got completed in November 2020, the CCI said in an order.
Axis Bank Limited, formerly known as UTI Bank, is an Indian banking and financial services company headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) launched WhatsApp banking services on Friday.
Speaking after the launch in Dharwad, Chairman, Shreekant M Bhandiwad, said technology-driven financial services have great potential and can go a long way in ensuring the best financial products reach even the farthest villages.
The WhatsApp banking channel would enable customers to seamlessly connect with the bank on the social media platform, and effortlessly avail of a host of banking services.
They would be able to get to know the balance in their account, the history of the last five transactions, information about bank deposits/loan products, the rate of interest and digital products.

India’s fastest woman athlete Dutee Chand who has two Asian Games silver medals received a four-year ban from the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).
The international sprinter was provisionally suspended in January 2023 after the officials found “anabolic agents/SARMS” in her urine samples.
The substances are listed under the “WADA’s 2023 prohibited list of non-specified substances”.
